A 2,500-Year Path of Wisdom and Compassion
Buddhism began in northern India some 2,500 years ago with the awakening of a prince named Siddhartha Gautama. It is not a dogma imposed from above but a way of understanding reality and freeing the heart from suffering — a path open to careful examination, applicable to any time or place. From its origin on the Gangetic plain, the Dharma travelled the length of Asia and, in our own era, the world, taking many beautiful forms — Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana — while carrying forward the same essential core: wisdom (prajñā) and compassion (karuṇā), united in the aim of liberation from suffering for all beings.
This website presents that whole body of thought in one place — from the Buddha's life and awakening, through every core and branch teaching, to the distinct voices of each major school, and practical guidance for walking the path oneself. Nothing essential has been left out; nothing has been simplified into caricature.
